Either buying or selling a vehicle can be a stressful experience. Buyers have the following thoughts: Is this the right one for me? How will I know if it has been maintained properly? Will it last for at least a couple years?
Sellers also have concerns, such as: Will the buyer show up? How long should I wait for my car to return from a test drive before panicking? Should I take a check from this guy?
Here at ASC Title & Tags, we can't help you with any of those questions, so good luck with all the voices in your head. What we can do is help you execute a transfer. While there are many variables, these are the most common situations. Call to get clarification and additional information. Here are some of the different instances and what you need to bring.

Thanks to the changes made with Act 138 amending Section 4942 relating to registered gross weights, subsection (c) was amended to exclude the requirement to register in combination for vehicles consisting of a motor vehicle towing a recreational trailer or recreational cargo trailer.
There is a new class registration for Recreational trailers, something commonly referred to as a camper, and Recreational Cargo Trailers. Recreational Cargo trailers are used for hauling things like ATV's, motorcycles, race cars, horse trailers, and the like.

Vehicle registration fees are used by the Commonwealth to help pay for road maintenance. The fees are broken down into types of vehicles such as Passenger Cars, Truck, Motorcycles, Motorhomes, Trailers. While all passenger cars are the same registration fee no matter the size and weight, truck registrations vary in costs and the fess depend upon weight, or potential weight. This makes sense since more weight on the roadways can create more wear on the roads. Here's the issue. If you aren't applying that weight to the road, why would you pay for it? You can if you want but if you are giving money away. If you insist on giving money away, just mail us any money you want to get rid of in small unmarked bills!

The first license plate we applied for was actually a passenger car vanity plate. Since we knew that if the replacement really worked, it would take 10 weeks to get a replacement. That's why we decided to replace a beat up trailer plate. That would be an easy one to have Penndot satisfy bcause all they had to do is grab a new one off the shelf.

In our last article, we explained how PennDot has initiated a program called DEFY designed to replace any license plate that starts with the letters D, E, F & Y. The replacement only takes place when you transfer the plate to another vehicle. If you keep your vehicle another 20 years, potentially you could have that same battered plate on your car. We offered another option in that article.

Your license plate. You've had is since 1995. You transferred it to 3 cars in 23 years. It's starting to look a little ragged but why should YOU replace it? You paid for it. It's falling apart and PennDot requires you to have it. That plate can rot, as far as you're concerned. We've seen it all in 28 years at ASC Title & Tags. Peeling, flaking, cut on the corners from people that were stealing registration stickers. You would be happy to replace the plate if Penndot would send you one. Well, this is your lucky year!

You are becoming a Pennsylvania resident and it's time to get your vehicle(s) changed over from you last State to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. You don't even know where to look. The place you came from involved the Department of Vehicles, a place that you went to with a packed lunch and a sick day from work because it was going to be an all day process. Once you got there, you would somehow be given the wrong form and after waiting in line for 2 hours, get to the from to be told you had the wrong form. You would have a new one handed to you and head to the back of the line, once again. Well, Pennsylvania isn't like that.

Many times we have customers that want to transfer a license plate that they have in their possession to a vehicle they are buying. Can it be done? Transfers of plates are $9.00 plus registration fees. If the plate still has registration time on it, you do not have to pay for a new registration as you can use the rest of what you have. There are some things that you have to consider. Let's go over what you need to know.

Either take the plate off (your car needs washed back there anyway) and run the back of the plate where the stickers are located under hot water for 4 minutes. That will soften the old glue and you should be able to peel most of it off. The rest you can scrape with a fingernail. If your license plate bolts go into a metal insert, put a little grease on them so that they come out easily next time. OR....
